Reading
Image result for Fantastic Mr. FoxWe have started out Novel Study on the Fantastic Mr. Fox and it's going great! I love this story and the students are really enjoying all the characters as well.

As we read through the chapters, we are practicing all the reading strategies we have worked on. Before reading, we created a list of questions that we had before beginning our story.
As we went along in the first couple chapters we would stop and answer some of our questions (they were erased off the board before I could snap a picture :( ).
We also have worked on Visualizing, by reading about our three farmers and drawing what we think they look like in our minds eye!

As we read, we often pause to infer character feelings, settings and personalities. We have some great reading detectives in here!

We also work through comprehension questions after every couple of chapters and make predictions, connections and summarize along the way!
True/False Comprehension Check Dash!

Strutured Word Inquiry
Last week, students created flowcharts to help them with the spelling rule of replacing the single silent e. They created their very own flow charts in google drawings and then used them to solve some word sums!

Writing
We have begun to become a little more critical, and self assess our Daily KidBlog posts. Students are working to enhance their posts with more details, explanation and writing strategies we have learned thus far this year.

This week we focused very closely on our Talk About it Tuesday's requirements & expectations. As a class, we recreated and added more things to our rubric. Then we did some Peer Review to check our progress.

During Peer Review, students "spin the wheel" and those chose come to read aloud (practicing fluency and self editing) to their class. Then as a class we look at which requirements they meet and give them a mark out of 5. Students are really supportive and offer excellent feed back to each other.

We also had a discussion about graphs, and created a pictograph to express our opinions!

Olympic Winter Games!
For our research topic this week, we looked into Olympic Games mascots! First we researched why Sohoorang the white tiger was chosen.
Students took to the web, learning how to narrow down google searches to find the best source for a research question.
Then once they had done some reading and researching, as a class we came up with some answers.

Next, we looked into previous years mascots and did a little reading on those. If you want to check them out, visit here
Each student chose a favourite mascot from over the years and we created a class Padlet! Check it out here!

Math
Grade 4's are continuing to practice their skill of multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers. This week we introduced how to regroup when multiplying. This is a very difficult skill and we will continue to work on it, and eventually towards multiplying 3 digit by 1 digit numbers.

Grade 3's are working through multiply strategies of solving multiplication problems. We have worked on Arrays, Groups/Sets, Repeated Addition and Skip Counting.
We also worked with Fact Families this week to deepen our understanding of the multiplication process.

Students learned a new version of Horse Races called, SLAM DUNK '36. This is similar to Horse Races, but students work on their multiplication tables up to 6 x 6 (hence the 36!)

Science 3
We are getting right into hearing and sound! This week we looked at the different types of sounds and if they can be harmful to our ears. Student brainstormed a list of sounds they might hear around school, and then we went on a field trip! We ventured around the school, measuring the decibels of the various sounds they thought of. Then we assessed if they were safe, hearing damage risks, or dangerous!
This lead to a discussion of how we protect our ears, why we protect our ears and what can happen if we do not. To demonstrate some hearing impairments, we blindfolded each other and used sound cancelling headphones, and shaking objects around them, to show what partial hearing loss would be like.

Finally, we took a look at the human ear, how it functions and its parts. The human ear has three parts (outer, middle and inner ear) which has many different parts to it. Ask you child if they can remember how sounds travels into our ears!
(you might need to give them a hint by saying "The Beach Boys")

Social 4
Students got to work on a very cool project this week with Mr. Maltais! They are working to retell the stories of first nations people using adobe spark. I will share some of the finished products with you soon!

We had a lovely Valentine's Day! Students had some time to share cards, and write a some compliments about each other.

Have a wonderful long weekend!
