FOR THE STOLLERY!
Our Grand Prize Draws for the Two Backpacks from the LRC will be announced at assembly on Friday.

We have had such a busy 2 weeks!

Last Tuesday we had Track Day! All afternoon we were outside doing long jump, 50 m, 100 m and Ball throw, as well as a few fun activities! The top 8 boys and girls from grades 1 and 2 will go to districts June 2. To see an album of the Track Meet click here

On Thursday we had our school Talent Show! A few talented little minions from our class put on some wonderful acts! We are so proud of them!!!

In the past couple of weeks, we have been working with addition and subtraction facts up to 18 and finding the relationship between addition and subtraction.
We talked all about Fact Families and how subtraction and addition are opposites of each other. We played a few games with dice and in partners to explore different fact families.

We are also starting to talk about story problems; how we can create and solve them. Looking at images of animals in the safari we created some different addition and subtraction story problems. In small students used animal counters to create their own story problem and share with the class. Students are also using Work on Writing time to create story problems.

In Daily 5, students are really taking charge of their writing! They have been working on lists, letters, notes and even "texts" to friends in the class. We never have a shortage of volunteers for Author's Chair!

In Science, we have started discussing the Needs of Plants. We started off by thinking - what are plants? We brainstormed what types of things in our world are plants and read a few books about them.

Next we talked about how plants start - SEEDS! But what are seeds? We sorted different objects into seeds and not seeds and spent some time describing them with our 5 Senses! Our next experiment was so much fun, a seed search!

Each group had their own fruit or vegetable and had to take it apart to find out where the seeds were! Once all the seeds had been found each group ventured around the class to check out the different seeds. Students then compared two different seeds by how they look and feel.

A Few Reminders:

MONDAY: Fort Edmonton Field trip
Just a few reminders about our trip!

  1. Please bring a disposable lunch(with names on them:)! We will not have somewhere to store lunch bag and will be walking around all day so everything should be able to be thrown away (including water bottles).

  1. We are outside all day! Please dress for the weather. Right now its looking like light rain, so rain boots and rain jackets would be great!

  1. Please send your child with an extra snack we can leave on our desks for our return, we always seem to be hungry!

WEDNESDAY: Early Dismissal June 1st
We have two more weeks of swimming left! June 1st and June 8th.

THURSDAY: District Track Meet
Only those students who made the team will be attending at Riverview in Devon.

FRIDAY: Battle of the Books

We are Busy Bees!

What a busy busy week!

In Math this week, we focused on subtraction sentences to 20. We started off by playing our Shake it Up game - but subtraction style! The students worked in pairs to come up with all the different subtraction sentences for 20 they could find.

We will continue to work on our basic math facts and relating addition and subtraction next week.

In Science, we have begun our Needs of Plants and Animals unit by discussing what the differences are between living and non living things. We know that living things need air, water and food, they can move and can reproduce. We had a guest visitor, Bubbles the fish in the class, and compared him to our plastic fish. Using our 5 senses (minus taste) we compared the two objects by their living and non living qualities.

In Social, we are continuing to talk about the differences between rural and urban communities. Looking at images, we sorted them on a venn diagram, where they would belong rural, urban or both(suburban).

With this in our minds, we tied it into our art this week. We did a guided drawing of a rural landscape! I was totally blown away with how amazing these kiddos did! We talked about what land features we would see, possible animals or buildings.

In Language Arts, we are finished our rough draft our of fairy tales! The next step is to use Google Slides to create E-books of our fairy tales!
This gave the students the opportunity to create their own story with a beginning, middle and ending. They created their own characters and setting and some of their Big Bad's are hilarious!

Daily 5 is still going great, with each week the students become so much more independent and have done amazing writing! I am always blown away by how much they have grown over the year.

Reminders:
Next week we start out Snack Sale for the Stollery on May 17th. Thank you to those parents who have offered time and snacks! If you have any questions or would like to volunteer please let me know!

Also next week is our Track Day on May 17th in the afternoon, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather, as we will be outside all afternoon.

On May 19th we have our Talent Show! A few of our students are in it this year which is so exciting! It is in the afternoon from 1 - 1:45 pm.

Friday 6 May 2016

This week has been SO BUSY!

It was Education Week and we had tons of fun and active stuff for our Kids! First we had Drumfit in the gym! This is always a favourite! We also had Zumba on Tuesday!

HOJA was in the house on Thursday afternoon! They are an a capella group that travel across Canada and perform in school. They're really fun to watch and amazingly talented! They even stopped by our room and sang a song for one of our birthday girls!

In Science this week we have been wrapping up our Spring study. On Monday it was so gorgeous out, we had to go outside! We used our senses to write about what we see, smell, taste, hear and feel in the spring in our outdoor classroom!

In Social, we are starting to talk about Urban, Rural and Suburban communities. We looked at pictures at what each would look like and then tested our ears! We listened to sounds and decided if
they would be in an Urban or Rural community.

This week in Math we are practicing Addition up to 20. We played Shake Up Addition, using 20 counters and shaking them in a cup we came up with all the possible ways to make 20.

Every week I am so amazed with how passionately these kiddos are starting to write! To conclude our Fairy Tale unit we are writing our very own Three Little story. We started out by making a plan, deciding what our characters would be and what their three houses would be made out of. Then we worked on writing beginnings to our stories. They're working so hard!!!!

Next week we will finish writing our middles and endings.

In Daily 5, we have added a few templates to Word Work and Work on Writing. Students are now able to practice writing Lists, Notes, Texts and Postcards!

In Word Work they are working with Popcorn Word sticks to make frames and put popcorn works in ABC Order.
