Back in Action!

What a great week back! I think we are all getting back into the groove of school!

In Daily 5 everyone has been amazing!! This week I have been sitting with small groups and working on helping with editing their own writing and adding details to their writing. It sounds like everyone had very busy breaks!!

We are currently on List 10 this week in spelling. Tuesday - Thursday mornings, students are working on their spelling booklets after agendas. These will be sent home on Thursdays, they do not have to be returned to school.

Please make sure students are bringing back their home reading folders so I can keep updating them with new books to read :)

In Science, we are continuing to work with building things! Earlier in the week we tested materials to see how strong, flexible or waterproof they were. Then we brainstormed which materials we would want to use to build certain structures. Our main structure we designed were mouse traps! First we had to think about what our traps purpose would be (to catch and hold a mouse) and what qualities it needed (strong, holes to breathe). Students then designed their own creative traps labelling their materials and parts.

Then we moved on to Pop-Ups! We made our own little zoo animals! Each student coloured and decorated their animal and in a week we will make their zoo enclosure.

In Social, we talked about - Where does our garbage go? We know that our garbage does not just dissappear after it leaves our street - it goes to the landfill! This means it is important to pay attention to what we throw away and what we can compost or recycle.

In Math, we are continuing with 2D and 3D shapes! To start our week off we sorted 2D shape stickers and created a rule. They did really great with this!

Later in the week we spent some time exploring our school and looking for 2D and 3D shapes in our environment. Students went in pairs with Ipads and snapped pictures of where they say their groups shape in the school. We came back to the class and each group presented their pictures and we charted them on paper. The next day we made our I See 3D Shapes books, where they had to think of where they see those four 3D shapes in our world.

We can sort all types of things too - not just shapes! Toys, jelly beans, food, almost anything as long as we have a sorting rule based on their attributes. Try it at home!

Calling all Volunteers!!

We are having a Volunteer Appreciation Drive thru! On Wednesday, April 13th our parking lot will be transformed into a Coffee and Donut stop.
